Woman charged in baby-snatch case due in court for plea

NEW YORK - (AP) - A North Carolina woman indicted on a charge thatshe kidnapped a newborn from a New York hospital more than twodecades ago makes another appearance in a New York courtroom today.

Ann Pettway is scheduled to enter a plea to a kidnapping chargeduring an arraignment scheduled for this afternoon. Pettway hasbeen held without bail since she was arrested last month. She wascharged with kidnapping Carlina White from Harlem Hospital inAugust 1987. White is now 23 years old.

The FBI has said in court papers that the Raleigh, NorthCarolina, woman took the baby after her own efforts at childbearingfailed.
