YONKERS - An off-duty NYPD officer came to the aid of two women in Westchester after an SUV skidded into the Saw Mill River Monday afternoon.

Police say Monday's rain caused a young woman driving the SUV to lose control and hydroplane. The red Toyota 4Runner skidded off the northbound side of the Saw Mill River Parkway, plummeting into 2 feet of water from the swelled river.

Authorities say an off-duty NYPD officer stopped and helped pull the two women to safety as the car was sinking.

The driver and passenger, both in their 20s from Mount Vernon, were shaken up but OK. They refused medical attention.

A tow company used a 75-foot metal chain to pull out the flooded vehicle. It left the right lane of the Saw MiIl closed for about 30 minutes near the Executive Boulevard exit.

Officials say that is it unclear if speed was a factor during the incident.
