PARKCHESTER - More than 100,000 New Yorkers are losing their federally funded unemployment benefits today as the bill that funds the benefits expires.

Started under the Bush administration, the emergency unemployment compensation was available to those who were unemployed and actively looking for work. On average, eligible people could collect a little more than $1,000 a month. State unemployment checks are unaffected.

Some residents say the checks are good because they help people until they can find jobs. Others feel unemployment benefits do more harm than good because people won't be as eager to find a job if they're getting unemployment.
