THE BRONX - A City Council committee hearing held Wednesday on proposed government-issued ID cards for undocumented immigrants is causing some debate.

The municipal identification cards would be available to all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status. Mayor Bill de Blasio strongly supports the idea, but Police Commissioner Bill Bratton is worried about its implementation.

News 12 asked residents how they feel about the ID cards. Some said they are a good idea because they would help the city's undocumented immigrants have access to city services such as bank accounts, leases and library cards.

Others said they are worried the cards can lead to fraud and identity theft.

City officials say they hope to have the program in place by the end of the year. Other cities like San Francisco and New Haven, Conn. already have similar cards.
