THE BRONX - The word "selfie" was the word of the year in 2013, and Bronx residents are explaining why the phrase has taken off.

One resident says a selfie is indicative of involvement with a location or activity, making people more likely to use it.

Another neighbor says the selfie allows viewers to see the person taking the picture, which develops a connection.

Researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology and Yahoo Labs say there is a 38 percent chance of a photo being liked on social media if it is a selfie. They also say overdoing it will cause followers to stop interacting with an account.
