ALBANY - A new bipartisan coalition has been formed in the state Senate, edging New York workers one step closer to making more money.

State Sen. Jeffrey Klein (D-NY) says he expects the coalition between Republicans and the Independent Democratic Conference will result in the approval of a wage increase. Democratic Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has proposed increasing the state minimum to $8.50 an hour from the current rate of $7.25.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) has supported a state wage hike in the past, but attempts to raise it have been blocked by lawmakers who argue that an increase would mean fewer available jobs.
