Workers protest OTB loss of medical benefits

THE BRONX - Laid-off workers from Off-Track betting are protesting loss of benefits today.

The city attorney is warning thatwith OTB trying to closepermanently, its retirees face losing medical benefits that werereimbursed by OTB unless the state steps in.

Corporation Counsel Michael Cardozo says the city cannot becalled on to bail out the state's public benefit corporations. TheOTB filed a motion to withdraw its bankruptcy reorganizationpetition Wednesday, saying it plans to close.

Officials say about 900 retirees would be affected. Theirinsurance costs about $6 million a year.
