THE BRONX - With average gas prices at $4.20 per gallon in the city, Yellow Cab drivers are urging officials to hike fares to cover costs.

The group that represents the cab drivers says it plans to ask the city to raise rates by about $1.50 for the typical ride.

Livery drivers agree that soaring gas prices are hurting them, but say they have no plans to follow suit. In a statement, they said that since they mostly serve low-income communities, they do not plan on raising rates.

Some livery drivers say they are working longer hours to make up for expensive gas.
