THE BRONX - Police say a cab driver hit a man with his cab yesterday at 3 a.m. on Baychester Avenue, leaving the 19-year-old man in critical condition.

Derek Maida, the 37-year-old driver, is now in custody. Police say Maida did not have a vaild driver's license, and that he fled the scene, before returning later.

Maida is being charged with vehicular assault in the second degree, tampering with evidence, and operating a vehicle with a suspended license, according to police. Neighbors in the city say speeding is a common issue in the area.
