Huntington Library, the oldest public library in the Bronx, is preserving the borough’s rich history while also giving back to the community.
Unlike the typical library, it houses hundreds of artifacts like photographs, maps and newspapers since its opening over 130 years ago.
"We have a board game that dates back to the 1870s, we have atlases, we have news reels. This is not just a circulatory library. This is a rich, historic resource for Bronx history,” said the library’s president, Angel Hernandez.
The dedicated staff have been working to keep the library alive and make it a positive community resource. During the pandemic, it held a food pantry which fed over 50,000 families in the span of five months.
