A state lawmaker from the Long Island hosted a town hall meeting on gun safety less than a week after a protest was held at a NRA fundraiser on the Island.
State Sen. Jim Gaughran hosted the gun safety meeting Monday evening. A massive protest was held outside the Nassau County Friends of the NRA's fundraiser in New Hyde Park last week.
Linda Beigel Schulman, of Dix Hills, was at the meeting. Her son, Scott, died last year while protecting his students from a mass shooter in Parkland, Florida.

"I will do everything I can and I will continue to speak, because we the people are the ones who can get things passed, not legislature," said Beigel Schulman.

Beigel Schulman says now that the Red Flag Law has been passed in New York, she'd like to see it passed on a federal level.

The law allows judges to confiscate firearms from anyone deemed a threat to themselves or others. Nine different gun control laws, including the Red Flag Law, have been passed in Albany since January.

"You can bring guns into New York from other states in the nation, so we really need the federal government to act and pass similar laws," said Gaughran.

Gaughran says he will next be trying to ban "ghost guns," which are created from parts sold over the internet. He hopes to pass that in early January.
