Andrea Doria lifeboat re-launches at SUNY Maritime

One of the lifeboats that saved people during the Andrea Doria disaster hit the waters in the Bronx Saturday for the first time in 60 years.
The S.S. Andrea Doria, an Italian cruise liner, collided with Stockholm, a Swedish ship, off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts. A total of 46 passengers and crew members died during the ordeal.
Historians say about half of the rescue boats were not even usable that day. The ship tilted so much from the collision that it prevented some of them from being lowered into the water.
The Genova was the first lifeboat to launch after the collision. It was re-launched at SUNY Maritime Saturday. The lifeboats were credited with saving many lives in the wake of the crash.
More than 1,000 people survived the accident because of nearby ships also coming to help.
