A group of Bronx high school students is growing vegetables for local food pantries in a Van Cortlandt Park garden.

The students planted seeds for more than two dozen types of vegetables last spring with the help of the Friends of Van Cortlandt Park organization, which oversees the garden.

They harvested some of the vegetables Tuesday afternoon and used leftover organic materials to make compost ahead of the next planting. The students and volunteers will continue to harvest for the next several weeks. The harvest will be sent to two Bronx food panties and also a local farmers market.

Organizers say it's important for the students to see where food comes from before it reaches the dinner table.

Last year, the program netted more than 320 pounds of produce.
