New fitness area and nature walk to be installed at Pelham Bay Park

Officials broke ground on a new adult fitness area and nature walk at Pelham Bay Park Tuesday.
Officials say the installation of the adult fitness area was funded with $416,000 from Councilman James Vacca.

The new fitness area will offer various athletic equipment including a pushup and pullup bar and situp and dip benches.

Vacca also funded a $100,000 nature trail and construction of an accessible path with viewing areas around a small vernal pond in the playground for all children.

Known as "Pond Walk," the project will allow children with limited mobility to explore the pond's edge for the first time.

Officials say the project was also advocated and supported by the Friends of Pelham Bay Park, which raised $15,000 that went toward the design of the nature walk.

The project is expected to be completed by summer 2017.
