City officials and the NYPD are warning both drivers and pedestrians to be more aware of their surrounding as the days become shorter and darker.
According to the Department of Transportation, 40 percent of crashes occur in November and March in the late afternoon when the sun is going down.
Officials say it is the deadliest times of the year for pedestrians walking along streets in New York City.
The city has launched a "Dusk and Darkness" safety imitative and is handling out more than a million information cards to people on the streets near Vison Zero areas.
The NYPD says it will also have more police on the road during the early morning and late afternoon hours.
