Trump Organization proposes golf course expansion in BX
President-elect Donald Trump is trying to grab more property to expand his more than 7,000-yard golf course at Ferry Point Park, but the city is saying no.
Trump Golf Links is now going to the people for support in its effort to expand the golf course to the waterfront.
The Trump Organization presented its proposal at a community board meeting Monday evening.
The controversy stems from a response Eric Trump received last month from the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development in response to following up on a letter Donald Trump sent in November 2013 requesting to expand the golf course to the waterfront.
In the response, Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen wrote to Eric Trump, "We are determined to protect and expand the community's access to its waterfront and not to impinge upon it."
The deputy mayor's office tells News 12 that the Trump Organization is proposing to expand the 17th and 18th holes into the waterfront park and offered to design and develop an adjacent patch of land to make up for the loss of parkland.
The Parks Department has its own plans for this piece of land - part of its vision of a 19.5-acre public esplanade park that it has been cultivating.
It says it is already in the design process for developing that particular section of the park to make the waterfront in front of the golf course publicly accessible.
The deputy mayor's office tells News 12 that the Trump Organization is also asking for a 20-year extension to its contract, which would result in a 40-year term for a city public golf course.
Trump executives also say they plan on using private sector money, and that their idea would save the city money.
