A 72-year-old man died after police say a hit-and-run driver struck him while he was crossing a Bronx intersection Thursday.
Police say a black Ford sedan with out-of-state license plates hit him at 10:30 a.m. at Nereid and Richardson avenues in Wakefield.
A woman tried to stop traffic at the intersection and another, in a car, tried to follow the fleeing driver, who blew several more red lights and drove away. Police are interviewing the woman who gave chase and have not yet made an arrest.
John Kelly, a witness, says he realized what had happened and got out of his car, which was stopped at a light across the street, and tried to help the victim, who remained conscious at the scene.
The man was transported to Jacobi Medical Center with severe trauma to his body and pronounced dead. Kelly says he did not expect the victim to die.
