Riverdale, Kingsbridge residents demand working traffic light
Residents in Riverdale and Kingsbridge say they are frustrated with a broken traffic light that may have contributed to a fatal accident over the weekend.
They say the road that runs between West 242nd Street and 251st Street is filled with speeding cars, trucks and busses. Pashka Smajlaj, 76, was crossing in the area over the weekend when she was struck and killed by a vehicle.
Neighbors say they have made phone calls and sent letters to the city since 2010 to install a traffic light. They say two lights were finally installed in October, but are covered by red tape and not working.
"If those lights would have been turned on, she could have crossed with a light instead of being killed," says Eleanore Sudbrock, of Riverdale.
News 12 reached out to the Department of Transportation, but has not heard back.
