AAA is projecting travel on the road this Thanksgiving will be the busiest it's been in years.

A report by the national auto group predicts 48.7 million travelers will take a trip of 50 miles or more for the holiday.

Robert Sinclair, a spokesman for AAA New York, says travelers should consider leaving early on Thanksgiving morning. He says the best time to beat the bridge and tunnel traffic is as early as 6 a.m. because traffic increases by 54 percent between 9 and 11 a.m. He also recommends that drivers obtain an E-ZPass.

Although gas prices are up from 2015, AAA says they remain cheaper than previous years. 

AAA also says it anticipates responding to more than 370,000 broken down vehicles for the holiday, for problems like flat tires and dead batteries.

The group recommends checking all fluids in a vehicle and tire pressures before hitting the road.

New York City, which is also anticipating an uptick in traffic, issued a gridlock alert through Friday.

MTA workers tell News 12 that the holiday week has been busy for them, too, although trains have been moving relatively smoothly at the East Fordham Road station.
