A Bronx man underwent surgery at Jacobi Medical Center after his hand was mangled by a pit bull on Monday.

As News 12 reported earlier in the week, 72-year-old Abdul Hakim was leaving a restaurant when the dog attacked. Witnesses say they saw the owner of the dog give the leash over to his two young daughters just before the attack.
Hakim's son, Roukan, said the injury to his father's hand was so bad that he could see his bones and tendons. Roukan Hakim also added that his father has diabetes, and is still suffering over the loss of his mother two years ago.

The family wants dog owners to be more cautious with their pets so incidents like this one do not happen again. Roukan Hakim says the family is also speaking with lawyers in hopes to get the owner to pay for Abdul Hakim's medical bills.

Community members say this is the sixth similar attack in six months.
