15 displaced after Highbridge house fire deemed suspicious
At least 15 people are without a home after a two-alarm fire that was deemed suspicious by the FDNY Wednesday.
The fire broke out at a three-story home on University Avenue in Highbridge just after 8 a.m.
Firefighters evacuated 11 adults and four children from inside a dwelling attached to the home where the fire spread.
However, neighbors say the home where the fire started has been vacant and under renovation for years. They say it is mostly used by squatters.
A super who works at the building across the street noticed smoke coming from the roof of the building and called 911.
More than 100 firefighters responded to the fire, which was under control shortly after it started.
The people displaced by the fire have been temporarily relocated by the American Red Cross.
