Advice for finding a new gym in 2017

Gyms across the country say new memberships spike to open each new year, and experts have tips for people seeking a new place to work out.

Many gyms want members to sign contracts, so advocates say people should make sure the gym is a fit for them before they sign the dotted line.

Shape Magazine recommends visiting several gyms in your neighborhood before picking one. Many gyms offer a free trial for a short period of time.

Some gyms include classes like yoga and kickboxing in their membership fees, but others charge extra. Some gyms also offer discounts on Groupon or Living Social.

The last step, once a gym is chosen, is to read the contract before signing it. In some fine print, gyms will only let members out of their contracts if they move a certain distance away.
