City to close 3 renewal schools in the Bronx

The Department of Education has announced a plan to close all City Renewal schools, including three in the Bronx.

Officials say JHS 145, the Leadership Institute and the Monroe Academy for Visual Arts and Design will all close.

Renewal schools, which enroll a higher-than-average share of students who are still learning English, live in temporary housing or have disabilities, were slated to become community schools this year if they had not reached goals proposed by the city.

Public Advocate Letitia James says closing and consolidating schools with have a dire effect on students.
