Funeral held for hero NYPD Detective Steven McDonald

A New York City police detective from Long Island who inspired people around the world was laid to rest today.

A funeral Mass was held for Detective Steve McDonald at St. Patrick's Cathedral.

At McDonald's wake in Rockville Centre yesterday, his wife Patti and son, Conor, had a message for Long Island.

"The most important thing that we can take away from my father is his mission of love, compassion and forgiveness and that cannot die, that has to keep going, that has to transcend," Conor said.

McDonald died Tuesday at North Shore University Hospital after suffering a heart attack last Friday.

McDonald was shot 30 years ago while on patrol in Central Park and was left paralyzed. McDonald later forgave the gunman and spent decades sharing his message of faith and forgiveness.

McDonald was laid to rest at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury.
