Volunteers build 1st soup kitchen in Hunts Point

The first soup kitchen in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx opened Monday.

The 1,200-square foot space inside the Bright Temple AME Church was converted into a soup kitchen by volunteers from across all five boroughs. The project was spearheaded by the Food Bank for New York City.

According to the nonprofit food bank, one out of four families in the Bronx struggles with affordable access to food.

Although there are many homeless shelters in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx, this is the first food pantry to open in the area.
