New food pantry opens at East Bronx Academy

A new food pantry has opened inside the East Bronx Academy.

Officials say the pantry opened Monday at the academy located on Southern Boulevard and is intended for students of the school and their families.

Organizers say the food pantry will provide support to families so students are able to focus better in class. The food pantry was spearheaded by Phipps Neighborhoods, a nonprofit group that helps low-income families in the Bronx.

The organization says it was able to open the pantry with a grant it received from the Food Bank for New York City.

Students will be able to pick up food for themselves and their families based on the amount of people living at the student's home.

Organizers say the pantry is open every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday after school hours.

The pantry also offers clothing and personal hygiene items.
