BX residents without mailboxes following spike in mail theft

Bronx residents are asking the postal service to replace mailboxes after a spike in mail theft across the city led many mailboxes to be removed.

"This has been a real problem the post office has, just not let the community know what's going on, and they have just refused to tell us," says State Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz.

Many residents now have to travel further to deliver mail and are concerned whether the removed mailboxes will return.

The United States Postal Service tells News 12 they are working to make sure the mail is secure in those areas, and they advise customers to take advantage of carriers and post offices in the meantime.

The USPS also says it plans to bring some of the blue collections boxes back with slots to make it more difficult for thieves to steal mail.
