Special Mass pays tribute to 'forgotten' war veterans

A special Mass paying tribute to veterans who had seemingly been forgotten was held at Saint Barnabas Church in Woodlawn Saturday afternoon.

The Mass, held by Catholic War Veterans, honored the 51 veterans the group had to bury in New York over the past two years. Those veterans had no family to help make funeral arrangements.

"There's no veteran that should be buried without honor," says David Crum, of Catholic War Veterans. "I don't care if you're black, white, green or purple."

The group members are hoping to raise awareness about the ongoing issue of homelessness and mental illness among veterans.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the unemployment rate among veterans was just over 4 percent in December 2016.
