Suspects in fatal restaurant beating appear in court
Three of the four people charged in connection with a large fight outside a Kingsbridge restaurant last October that left a man dead appeared in Bronx court on Monday.
Jenny Gutierrez, Hector Quezada and Joel Hernandez were charged with two counts of gang assault and manslaughter in the death of 36-year-old Donell Soto.
As News 12 has reported, Soto was brain dead for a few days after the attack and later died at St. Barnabas Hospital. Witnesses say Soto got into some sort of argument with several people outside La Parrilla Latina restaurant on Broadway and was then kicked and punched by a group.
In court Monday, the judge dropped the manslaughter charge against Quezada. The decision was made after viewing surveillance video from outside the restaurant. Prosecutors say it shows Quezada throwing the first punch, but then stopping and even pulling people off Soto.
Soto's family says they are disappointed with the decision.
The trio's next court date is scheduled for March 14. The fourth suspect, Jose Mendez, is due in court the week before.
