Grand Concourse overhaul reaches next step
Planning has begun on the fourth stage of a safety improvement project along the Grand Concourse, and residents have a few ideas they hope to get rolling.
Four pedestrians have died between 175th Street and Fordham road since 2011, and hundreds of people have been injured. Three earlier phases are at different stages of completion on other stretches of the road.
"The Grand Concourse is actually one of the most dangerous streets not only in the Bronx but in the entire city," says Erwin Figueroa, of the advocacy group Transportation Alternatives.
Some residents want improvements at the intersection with East Tremont Avenue, which critics say lacks sufficient space for the many pedestrians and bicyclists who cross there. Other popular ideas are sidewalk extensions and protected bike lanes.
