Body of missing BX mother found in Washington Heights

The body of missing Bronx mother Joan Viau was found in Washington Heights Saturday afternoon, police sources have confirmed.

Viau, 52, had been missing since Monday. The discovery was made by a pedestrian who saw her body on Chittenden Avenue, where it had apparently been thrown over a wall.

Her son, Joseph Garcia, 31, was arrested early Saturday and charged with grand larceny for unauthorized use of her credit cards and her car.

Garcia was the last person seen with his mother on Monday, leaving her Ollinville apartment to go to the veterans hospital in Kingsbridge.

Officials say blood was found in Viau's bathtub inside their Carlisle Place apartment and in her vehicle.

Police say Garcia is a person-of-interest in her death. Garcia was arraigned in court just hours before his mother's body was found.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause of death.
