SNAP benefits to be accepted online

A new healthy eating program will allow recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits to order fruits and vegetables online.

The Department of Agriculture has selected Amazon and FreshDirect as the first online SNAP vendors.

"Now those people who are EBT card holders have the same options as someone who is making $150,000 or $200,000 a year," says Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.

Advocates say the program can make access to healthier foods easier while creating competition for farmers markets and grocery stores.

The program is expected to roll out in the next few months.
