Con Ed repairs gas, water lines on Watson Avenue

Con Edison says it restored gas service Wednesday to residents of Watson Avenue in Soundview after a water main break earlier in the week.

The water main broke Monday between Croes and Rosedale avenues and left residents in the area without cooking gas, the utility company says.

Officials say a resident smelled gas in the area, and when crews opened the ground they saw the broken water main. The repairs required workers to cut service to a 95-unit apartment building and a nearby school.

But many of the apartments in the area use both natural gas and oil, according to Con Ed. The homes used oil for heat during the repairs.

Watson Avenue was closed Wednesday between Rosedale and Croes avenues as more repair work continued.

Con Ed officials urge anyone who smells gas to report it quickly.
