Bronx teacher accused of raising cockfighting roosters
A teacher from the Bronx is facing charges after court documents revealed he farmed and sold cockfighting roosters.
Hector M. Cruz is facing charges with selling, possessing and transporting animals for the purposes of participation in an animal fight.
According to the NYPD Animal Cruelty Investigation Squad, Cruz raised the birds at a farm in the Bronx between 2012 and 2016.
Authorities say Cruz sold and shipped his roosters to individuals across the country, knowing that the birds were intended for cockfights and communicated with buyers through social media and received payments of as much as $600 for fighting birds, according to court documents.
Cruz is an ESL teacher at P.S. 211. He was released on $25,000 bond.
He could face up to five years in prison if convicted.
