Man charged in beating death of neighbor in Melrose

A 40-year-old man is facing charges Friday in connection with the death of his neighbor in Melrose.

Police say Junal Jordan has been charged with murder and manslaughter in the death of 46-year-old Bakary Dabroe. Police say Dabroe suffered a head trauma after getting off the elevator at his apartment building on East 156th Street Thursday.

Police responded to a 911 call of an assault just after 5 p.m., and found Dabroe unresponsive and unconscious in the hallway on the seventh floor. EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

According to police, Jordan was shadow boxing in the hallway before grabbing Dabroe and beating him. They also say he has several prior arrests that include robbery and reckless endangerment.

Family members say the two didn't know each other.

Dabroe leaves behind a wife and six children. His body will be flown to Gambia for funeral services.
