Best of the Bronx: Woman with cerebral palsy competes in pageant

A young Bronx woman is sending a positive message Friday to anyone with a disability as she competed in the Miss New York USA Pageant.

Janine Santos, 23, has cerebral palsy, but didn't let that slow her down. Janine says she made many friends and got to live her ultimate dream.

"I finally got to walk across the Miss New York USA stage," says Santos.

Santos says even though she couldn't wear the 6-inch heels and do some of the choreographed moves, she was made to feel like she fit right in with everyone.

The inspiration for Santos to compete came from a segment she saw on TV that featured Abbey Curran. Curran was Miss Iowa USA 2008 and also has cerebral palsy.

Santos is currently a student at Hostos Community College and hopes to become a lawyer. She says her ultimate goal is to show other girls that beauty comes in many different packages.
