Woman caught on video stealing from church
Parishioners of a Bronx church are outraged after a woman was seen on surveillance video stealing from their church's donation box.
The pastor of Saint Benedict's Church on Otis Avenue says people who have stolen from the church have used all kinds of tactful measures, such as sticking a used piece of gum on the end of a candle lighter and slipping it down the donation box so money sticks to it.
He says the church noticed a drop in donation size, but was not able to pinpoint a possible suspect until surveillance cameras were installed.
Police say the video shows a woman using an object to remove an undetermined amount of cash from a locked donation box and then fleeing the church.
The incident was reported to police on Jan. 12, but the pastor of this church says this has been a problem for years.
"I'd rather see this as an activity to help someone as opposed to making a big mountain out of something that's obviously a struggle for someone," says Father Steven Norton.
Police describe the suspect as 30 to 35 years old, last seen wearing a dark coat, blue jeans and black and white Nike sneakers.
