Community supports teacher who claims to be victim of hate crime

Community members gathered on Sunday night in support of a Hunts Point public school teacher who says she was the victim of a hate crime.

Shirin Chakder says she was the victim of a hate crime last week while wearing her hijab.

Chakder, a U.S. citizen who calls the Bronx her home, says she was walking home from work when a woman drove by, rolled down her window and cursed at her.

She said the woman told her to go back to her country, and asked why she was there.

Neighbors showed up for the event Sunday evening to show support for Chakder.
