Man charged in murder of Queens jogger Karina Vetrano
After a months-long investigation, police say they believe they have found the man responsible for the death of Karina Vetrano.
Chanel Lewis, of East New York, has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of the 20-year-old Howard Beach resident. Police say Lewis confessed to punching and strangling the Queens woman.
Investigators say Vetrano was jogging alone in Spring Creek Park around 5 p.m. on Aug. 2 when she was confronted by Lewis who attacked and strangled her. They say her father found her body later that day lying in a marshy area about 15 feet from the trail near 161st Avenue and 78th Street.
Police say Vetrano fought tirelessly for her life and that it was DNA found under her fingernails, on her back and cellphone that led investigators to the 20-year-old.
Lewis is being held without bail and is expected to be back in court on Feb. 21.
