Police chase in Mt. Vernon ends with gunfire in Wakefield

Officials say a police chase that started in Mount Vernon ended with gunfire in the Bronx Tuesday near Wakefield.

They say the Mount Vernon Police Department pulled over a car with a man and woman inside for a tinted window citation. They say the car then took off, crossing into the Bronx by Bronx Boulevard near E. 234th Street.

Authorities say the car rammed into a Mount Vernon police vehicle and struck several other vehicles. They say the chase ended after the suspects drove into another vehicle at a gas station.

Witnesses tell News 12 the man in the car shot at the Mount Vernon officers, who then returned fire.

The NYPD has confirmed that the woman in the vehicle was shot. They say she was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center with non-life threatening shoulder injury.

The NYPD also says no gunshots were fired at or by NYPD officers. They say the man is currently in custody.

Officials say the NYPD and Bronx District Attorney's Office are processing the scene. They say the Mount Vernon Police Department is handling the investigation.
