DSNY salt spreaders deploy as snow falls in the Bronx
Salt spreaders staged up outside the Zerega Avenue sanitation station in the Bronx Thursday morning just as the first snowflakes fell in what is expected to be a heavy snowstorm.
Over 689 salt spreaders have been deployed across all five boroughs of the city with over 315,000 tons of salt, according to the Department of Sanitation.
Officials say about 1,600 plows will be dispatched after the first 2 inches of snow have fallen.
Sanitation workers are working on 12-hour shifts to ensure city roads are safe to drive on, officials say.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning until 6 p.m. today.
The Department of Emergency Management is warning residents to stay off of the roads if they can and to take public transportation if possible.
Some parts of the Bronx could see up to 11 inches of snow.
All city public schools have been closed.
