Group promotes shopping local by paying for laundry service

The White Plains Merchants Association took over the Lavamax Laundromat Monday to promote shopping local.

The group partnered with Laundry Love to bring the event to the Bronx for the first time, paying for residents' laundry for four hours.

The purpose was to allow community members to instead use their money toward things like food, gasoline, transportation and rent.

Monday's event is the first time Laundry Love teamed up with any business or merchants association in the Bronx, but they say they are hoping it starts a movement to get other merchants to host similar events.
