Police probe vandalism to trees at Pelham Bay Park
Parks officials say someone has vandalized more than a dozen trees in Pelham Bay Park.
Officials say the 15 pine oak trees were girdled, or had a band of bark stripped from them. They say that girdling effectively kills the trees as it disrupts their vascular system.
According to the Parks Department, the work was done by someone who knew what they were doing.
Police are investigating the vandalism. Officials say the damage caused is estimated in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
