A new pilot literacy program launched Monday at shelters across the city.
City officials say the program is aimed at giving books to children who typically don't have access to them.
They say the program will serve more than 4,000 children at shelters across the city.
The Department of Education has put libraries at 20 different shelters, eight of which are in the Bronx. Each is filled with about 200 books donated by the New York Public Library and Scholastic.
Some books are in English, others in Spanish, and many of them are on school-mandated reading lists.
City officials are hoping to put them in many more shelters around the city sometime soon.
