While the harsh winter took a toll on many local roads, some of the bigger potholes reveal the borough's history.
A pothole near the Grand Concourse at East 166th and Walton Avenue reveals how the roads used to look.
The entire street used to be paved with Belgium stone, which many commonly refer to as cobblestone.
The Belgium stone dates back to the late 19th century in the Bronx.
Residents say the winter has been so bad that they can see the stone patterns peeking out from deeper potholes.
The Department of Transportation has filled in more than 240,000 potholes across the city.
