Group raises awareness about organ donor registry
April is National Donate Life Month, and some Bronx residents are trying to raise awareness about the importance of signing up to become a donor.
Live On NY is dedicated to educating the public about the thousands of New York City residents who are in need of a lifesaving organ transplant.
The organization says only 22 percent of New Yorkers are enrolled in the state registry, putting the state last in the country for the percentage of residents registered.
According to Live On NY, 18 people die every day waiting for a transplant in the U.S.
Edmonia Fulmore says patients like her could wait anywhere from three to seven years to get the organ they need.
Fulmore was able to get a new kidney and her son, Brandon, was able to give his to someone in need because of a match made at their Bronx hospital.
Brandon said despite not being a match for his mom, he still gave his kidney to help save another person's life.
