A nursing home in Riverdale has launched an innovative way to help patients suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's.

Patients at the Hebrew Home who struggle with their memory are now starting their day off with a virtual visit. Each morning, they watch a pre-taped video from a loved one who assures them they are safe and loved. It's all part of a pilot program started by social services director Charlotte Dell. 

Louise Irving, 94, has lived at the home for years and suffers from dementia. Family members have been told that she often wakes up confused and agitated. But the nurses say since Irving has been receiving videos from her daughter her mood has been better.

Workers are planning to expand the virtual visits to about 260 residents suffering from either Alzheimer's or dementia because the program has been so succssful.

Dell says her inspiration for the program was the Adam Sandler movie "50 First Dates."
