Street renamed to honor community advocate
A former community leader in Riverdale was honored Sunday in a way that will help keep her name permanently alive in the neighborhood.
Debbie Bowden, who was a longtime school speech therapist and member of Community Board 8, died back in 2012.
Residents gathered Sunday to see the corner of West 235th Street and Independence Avenue renamed Debbie Bowden Way.
Bowden served as the chair of the education committee for 17 years. She was a longtime opponent of overcrowding in public schools.
The effort to rename the street corner for Bowden started shortly after her death.
Mayor Bill de Blasio approved the move earlier this year.
