Study ranks BX safest place to drive in NY
A 20-year study released by the Auto Insurance Center reveals that the Bronx is the safest place to drive in the state.
The report analyzed fatal crashes per capita. It also say the Bronx ranks fourth as one of the safest cities in the country.
"You usually need lots of high speed in order to kill yourself in a car," says AAA spokesman Robert Sinclair. "You just can't get that when you're in a crowded, urban environment."
There were 1,027 fatal accidents in the Bronx over the past 20 years, according to the report compiled from National Highway Traffic Administration databases. That's roughly 900 fewer crashes than either Brooklyn or Queens.
However, Sinclair says the report ignores non-fatal crashes that resulted in serious injury.
