City Island sewers could receive major upgrades

Some major upgrades could be coming to City Island's sewer system.
A rough draft proposing changes to the neighborhood's antiquated sewage and water main systems has been on the table for more than two years. A final proposal has finally been issued, and officials say they are looking to get permits for the two-part project.
Members of the City Island Civic Committee say the new changes will bring significant improvements to the drainage of storm water, reduce flooding and decrease chlorine in the water.
The Department of Environmental Protection says the project will begin in 2016.
The proposal was unanimously passed by Community Board 10. It is now on its way to the borough president's desk.
